ABOUT ME

max horn(1)

I’m a professional French horn player and a member of the orchestra at Welsh National Opera.  I’m also a psychology graduate and I work with musicians at all levels to help tackle performance anxiety and any other performance related areas.

PSYCHOLOGY

Whilst working as a freelance musician I became interested in the psychological side of performing.  I completed a degree in Psychology (BSc Hons) and more recently an MSc in Performance Psychology.  Additionally, I am a member of the British Psychological Society (GMBPsS)

Over the years I have developed a range of ideas to help fellow musicians tackle different performance related concerns, including performance anxiety, building a performance mindset and generally approaching performing under pressure in a healthier, happier way.  I draw on established techniques based around performance psychology in conjunction with my own ideas and experience of performing, spanning over 25 years..

MUSIC

I studied French horn with Peter Dyson and Angus West at Birmingham Conservatoire and completed a Performance Masters at Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London. There I learned with Richard Bissill, Hugh Seenan and Jeff Bryant, and focussed on low horn technique with Jonathan Lipton.

I was appointed 4th Horn at Welsh National Opera in 2019, moving from Opera North (2010-2019), and worked as a freelance musician in London from 2002-2010.

Away from work, I enjoy spending time with my wife and two young boys.  I live in Bristol and I love motorbikes, travel, coffee, skimming stones, the countryside, taking photos and getting some exercise when time allows….
